Shocking Update — Sunshine Can Actually Decrease Your Vitamin D Levels (www.Mercola.com)

www.mercola.com As you no doubt know, exposure to sunlight causes vitamin d to be produced in your skin. but it is only a portion of the solar spectrum known as uvb that has this effect. other parts of the solar spectrum can have very different results.

Oh my god, avoid taking showers!! American will never smell the same.
Question: isn’t that only with the thick plastic like windows, what you see in new buildings? I am curious if works different with older window glass…
@jtlbb2
I just wish he’d cite evidence that shows the need for his advice, and shows that his advice might work. Leaves less up to speculation/paranoia. You can make videos to reach your audience, but it’d be improved by just inserting some links to the logic behind it. He doesn’t half drone on though does he?
@pureno1z
Makes me a person asking that he’d cite references for his advice in these videos….?
@Teghead: So anyone who disagrees with the mainstream is a quack? The “style” of him using videos is just him using a modern media to reach a larger population than he would if he wrote this information in medical journals. If the only place you could find his information is through medical journals, how many people do you think he’d reach? Not many at all.
WHAT NEW EVIDENCE, please, your a doctor sight your reference.
So let me get this right. If vitamin D is produced on, not in, but on the skin, how does showering lower ones endogenous levels? Are you implying that the cholecalciferol on the skin somehow pulls the cholecalciferol out of ones bloodstream? That would be pretty amazing.
Its not the sun that Deacrease your vitamin D. Its the showering. But a good sentence to draw attention to your looooooong movie about 1 simple thing.
Sorry, Teghead,….. It is a citation from Dr. Mercola that is required.. about not washing for 2 days or 1-2 hours or what ever claim is next!
What has soap washing got to do with the Vit D that is made beneath our skin due to sun exposure????????
Apologies, make that hypervitaminosis A, not D. The point was that Eskimos living on a diet of fish, seal, bear, whale do not die from hypovitaminosis D, obviously.
However hypervitaminosis D is a risk, calcification can occur in various places: kidney nephrons, arterioles, you can fall quite ill. Googling vitamin D gets you a lot further than Mercola’s videos.
evidence citation please.
Oh, Mercola said it, as if it were fact. So it therefore must be fact. Even if he means well, he may not be representing the evidence accurately, it may not support his strong assertions. Please reserve your judgement til you see some evidence (waiting on that), especially if you’re considering forking out any cash.
…that is relevant to Mercola’s advice, anyway.
Unless he can supply it and I’ve just not been able to find it. Which would be great! That’s what people in his position should actually be doing.
I agree that Mercola is a very subtly disguised quack with vested interests and whose style of advice (video-campaigning) is questionable.
However the style of whistle-blowing you’re employing is a bit like flailing your arms wildly.
No need to try and scaremonger on the basis that vitamin D is a pro-steroid, meaning it is the precursor of a signalling molecule comprised of cholestrol/lipids. Sure “steroid” will scare people but it’s not constructive. There’s little literature on vit D…
Inuit people actually have a very high prevalence of vitamin D poisoning, from their dependence on a diet of fish, seal and whale liver.
“Oxidative stress” is not well supported by any evidence, and I doubt that it is the mechanism by which exposure to certain wavelengths increases the incidence of cancer.
Can you start citing papers in your videos, as it would encourage your audience to interpret risks and validity of treatments for themselves, instead of getting it second-hand from you.
Even if you mean well you are vulnerable to human-error, so this approch may be beneficial.
whats the best time of the day to go out for vit d? i live in the philippines so is very near to the equator.
I think Dr. Mercola is quite brave to bring this information forward. Nothing will get you crazy looks like suggesting that the compulsive daily shower obsession should be questioned (except maybe suggesting the compulsive employment obsession should be as well). Whoops, a lot of you have already judged me nuts based on that sentence – but the facts are nonetheless the facts. If showering with soap destroys vitamin D on the skin, then it may be detrimental to your health. Happy scrubbing.
you guys are so weird, fighting with someone you don’t even know !!!!!
To funny…
Thank you for all this very interesting information on Vitamin D.
